In February 2012 and April 2014, Artwestimage photographers had the privilege to explore Lake Powell, the second-largest man-made lake in the United States.
Once a few miles from the Wahweap marina in 2012, Artwestimage staffers found themselves in another world, with a skyline unmarred by signs of civilization. In the grips of the usual mild winter, only a handful of other boats were seen on the lake over the duration of their four-day houseboat excursion. Traveling a total of 125 miles, the group explored Padre Bay, the upper reaches of Rock Creek Canyon, Oak Creek Bay and Secret Canyon, the Rainbow Bridge in Forbidding Canyon and lower West Canyon.
In 2014, photographers returned to Lake Powell, this time from the Bullfrog Marina. After nearly a week of Colorado River boat travel, the team explored the middle reaches of Glen Canyon from Forbidden Canyon in the north to the Hole in the Rock south of the mouth of the Escalante River. Included in their journey was a seven-mile excursion up the Escalante to Three Roofs Ruin. Starkly foreboding, the Escalante was the last major river drainage in the contiguous 48 United States to be mapped due to its remoteness and roadlessness. With low water conditions, great caution had to be used in navigating the upper reaches of the Escalante. Other feature destinations in 2014 were Defiance House and Widow's Ledge, both beautiful and remotely located Anasazi cliff dwellings.
