Rich placer diggings were discovered in Alder Gulch, of the Idaho Territory in the spring of 1863 and the stampede of gold seekers was on! Gold sluices soon lined the gulch and business districts blossomed as trading and amusement centers for 5000 placer miners. Virginia City, the best known of these, became the Capitol of the Montana Territory in 1865. This "very much alive" ghost town is frozen in time, circa 1870. It is a remarkably well-preserved, representing the true and original Old West. Artwestimage.com staffers were onsite in Virginia City in July of 2018 focusing their lenses on store fronts, interiors and vintage merchandise artifacts. Enjoy this series of unique HDR image interpretations and brief histories of the sites found in the downtown district of this 1860's boom town.
