Rich placer diggings were discovered in Alder Gulch, of the Idaho Territory in the spring of 1863 and the stampede of gold seekers was on! Gold sluices soon lined the gulch and business districts blossomed as trading and amusement centers for 5000 placer miners. Virginia City, the best known of these, became the Capitol of the Montana Territory in 1865. This "very much alive" ghost town is frozen in time, circa 1870, due to the efforts of the Bovey Family restoration efforts and the Montana Historical Society. It is remarkably well-preserved, representing the true and original Old West.  It is on artwestimage.com now!   See the collection here:
