Thinking back to the Old West, ranchers spent their lives tending to the land that made such a difference in western history and continues to affect the way we live today. Rodeo has entertained millions and inspired generations of skilled cowboys and cowgirls, who continue to compete in events across North America.
The idea of rodeo spun out of the use and treatment of animals in ranching out of necessity. The horse was a central part of ranching dating back to America's Spanish settlements of the 1700s. Horses allowed ranchers to work with livestock in a safer, more efficient, and faster manner. With the development of the professional cowhand, the sport of rodeo came to be.
Professional rodeos in the United States and Canada usually incorporate both timed events and "rough stock" events, most commonly: calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc and bareback bronc riding, bull riding, and barrel racing. Each event features athletes skilled in their craft and trained animals adept in their instincts, with each contributing to a sport rich in tradition, lore, and beauty.
