Located north of Arches National Park is Sego Canyon, also known as Book Cliffs and Thompson Wash. Off of I-70, about 3 ½ miles north of Thompson Springs, are four large petroglyph and pictograph panels left by several different cultures. The
Fremont culture thrived from A.D. 600 to 1250 and was a contemporary
with the Anasazi culture
of the Four Corners area. There is also rock art from the Archaic
period dating from 7000 B.C., depicting the unique Barrier Canyon style period from around 2000
B.C. They are characterized by more than 80 imposing and haunting life-sized
figures with hollowed eyes or missing eyes and the frequent absence of
arms and legs. Some claim that the mysterious figures are evidence of
alien visitation in our ancient past, while scholars maintain that the
strange beings represent shamanistic visions produced in trance-like
states. Two outlying panels feature pictographs created by the Ute tribe dating from as far back as 1300 AD.
