  • Title:  Old Bedlam at Fort Laramie
  • Description:  Back when it was built, in 1849, this military barrack and meeting hall was called “Old Bedlam”. The oldest and most prominent structure at old Ft. Laramie, some say it was named after the notorious gatherings of a boisterous nature that took place here. Others believe it was tabbed Old Bedlam after the Bedlam sawed lumber used in the construction of the building. Ft. Laramie was the major military outpost in the Eastern Wyoming Territory. The clapboard structure was spacious enough to hold the largest gatherings in the area. And those gatherings, especially after payday, became legendary parties. It was at Old Bedlam where the famous ride of Portugee Phillips finished. Phillips rode from Ft. Fetterman, some 236 miles to the northwest, to Ft. Laramie to tell of the Ft. Fetterman Massacre. Portugee Phillips’ trusty thoroughbred-steed, Grey Eagle, died on the steps of Old Bedlam. Old Bedlam would serve as the hub of a very active Ft. Laramie for decades and after several years of neglect, has been rebuilt as a monument museum.
