  • Title:  Fire Wagon No. 1 - Wagons and Buggies Collection No 3
  • Description:  Original vintage fire wagon is displayed in George Thexton's Livery Stable circa 1875 in Virginia City, Montana. Rich placer diggings were discovered in Alder Gulch in the spring of 1863 and the stampede of gold seekers was on! Sluices soon lined the gulch and various “cities” blossomed forth as trading and amusement centers for 5000 placer miners. Virginia City, the best known of these and the sole survivor, became the Capitol of the Montana Territory in 1865. The building was originally constructed as the first stone structure in the community and served as a meeting place for the Vigilantes in 1863 and 1864. The group tried and executed two dozen criminals in the area during those two years.
