- Description: About 100–120 commercial fishing vessels are homeported at Eureka. Commercial fishery is made-up of the resident fleet as including 8–10 trawlers, 15–20 salmon trollers, 5–10 smaller groundfish vessels and about 80 crabbers. Typical deck equipment consists usually of two very heavy outriggers each towing one beam trawl which passes through blocks at the end of the outriggers. Typical storage equipment for hauling and stowing the net aboard is usually on large spools or spindles. Fish finders are used extensively on board trawlers according to the size of the boat; and typical equipment consists of a sonar and an echo sounder. Safety release systems are sometimes incorporated in the boom stays to prevent the boat from capsizing should the gear snag suddenly on the sea bed. For safety reasons the engine power of flatfish beam trawlers is limited to 2000 HP.
