- Description: Washington State Ferries operates the largest ferry system in the United States. Twenty-one ferries cross Puget Sound and the greater Salish Sea, and carry nearly 24 million people annually to 20 different ports of call. The state manages the Port Townsend Ferry connecting to Coupeville, Washington on Whidbey Island, and schedules crossings convenient to travelers from Port Townsend. Currently, it is a single boat service beginning at 6 am, with the last trip beginning at 6 pm. Artwestimage photographers made a 2 pm trip from Whidbey to Port Townsend on September 10, 2021 under gray skies and on choppy, wind-driven waves.
