Sidewinder from Shelter Cove

  • Title:  Sidewinder from Shelter Cove
  • Description:  At Woodley Island, this well-weathered fishing vessel rests awaiting its next journey on the high seas. Shelter Cove is a small fishing community along the steep Humboldt Coast in northern California. When Highway 1 was built in the early part of the twentieth century, due to the natural obstruction of the redwood forest, Shelter Cove was isolated. The eventual abandonment of all other settlements on the 40 mile long "LOST COAST", says a lot about the independent nature of the people who chose to stay. Residents of the small community of 700 cling to life tenuously, promoting tourism and fishing by renting boats and rooms. Like this boat, Shelter Cove has seen better days.
