  • Title:  Chasm Below Athabasca Falls
  • Description:  The Athabasca River is sourced by numerous mountain rivers and creeks, and five glaciers some 46 miles to the southeast of Athabasca Falls. The famed Columbia Icefield feeds four of these five glaciers. When the weather warms, the meltwater increases dramatically and is channeled to Athabasca Falls. The falls is not known so much for its height as for its force, due to the large quantity of water falling into the gorge. The river tumbles over a layer of quartzite and through the softer limestone below, carving a short gorge and a number of potholes in a confined area below the falls. This photograph was taken below the falls, at the end on the narrow limestone chasm, just before the river returns to its normal channel.
