- Title: Athabasca Glacier, Jasper NP
- Description: Athabasca Glacier, at four miles long and nearly 1000 feet thick, is one of the six principal sections of the Columbia Icefield, located in Jasper National Park. The glacier currently loses depth at a rate of 16 feet per year and has receded more than a mile and lost over half of its volume in the past 125 years. It is the most visited glacier in North America, with tours by the Icefield Discovery Center, which is located on the parkway across from the glacier. Snow coach buses transport tourists to the glacier's lower reaches, where they can spend time walking on the ice and taking videos and/or photographs. We figured to walk on the ice in other areas along our journey, so we didn't both laying down the $100 apiece to partake. Taken from the moraine piles forward of the glacier front, this photograph shows several coaches in the left foreground.
