- Title: Harry Jerome Bronze at Stanley Park, Vancouver BC
- Description: As both our photographers are sports fans, we were naturally intrigued by this statue on Vancouver Harbor. Harry Jerome represented Canada in the Summer Olympics in 1960, 1964, and 1968 and won a bronze medal in the 100-meter race at the 1964 event in Tokyo. Jerome set several national and international records, but more importantly, he broke racial barriers as a black competitor at Canadian sporting events during the 1960s. Unfortunately, he died in 1982, from a brain aneurysm, at the age of 42. He was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 1966 and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1971. Several sports-related venues in Vancouver are named after him, including the Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre in North Vancouver, and the Harry Jerome Sports Centre in Burnaby.
