- Title: Helmcken Falls, Wells Gray Provincial Park, BC
- Description: The stunning Helmcken Falls, the fourth tallest waterfall in Canada, lies situated within the east-central region of the province of British Columbia. This area of British Columbia, in Wells Gray Provincial Park, occurred as the result of an extensive, long-term period of volcanic activity. Lava is deposited to an incredible depth of about 820 feet. Later, incredibly large and powerful floods from the melting of Ice Age glaciers later carved a path through the layers of deposited lava that formed the plateau. The water volume of Helmcken Falls originated from the melting glaciers covering much of the region and now is eroded by the ever-flowing Murtle River. Helmcken plunges 462 feet, in a single plunge, from the relatively narrow lip of the canyon above. Though its width naturally varies, depending upon the seasons and rainfall levels, this averages 50 ft. At its base lies another incredible natural feature, a natural amphitheater. This feature, carved out by the waterfall, extends roughly 150 ft back into the cliff. It also has a remarkable width of about 500 ft. Wells Gray Provincial Park is well worth adding to your itinerary, with Helmcken Falls being the most dramatic of all the waterfalls we captured on this expedition.
