Half Dome from Glacier Point

  • Title:  Half Dome from Glacier Point
  • Description:  Half Dome is a quartz monzonite batholith at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. Named for its distinct shape. One side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. The top of Half Dome can be ascended following an 8.5 mile and over 4000-foot elevation gain trail from the Yosemite Valley floor. The 400-foot final pitch up the peak's steep but somewhat rounded east face is ascended with the aid of a pair of post-mounted steel cables originally added in 1919. The cables are removed from the rock face during the off-season due to dangerous climbing conditions during the winter.
