  • Title:  Sand Harbor Vista
  • Description:  The resources of Tahoe’s east shore were prized by Native Americans long before Europeans made their discovery of the lake. The Washo Tribe spent summers at Sand Harbor fishing, hunting and gathering. In the early 1880s, lumber magnate Walter Scott Hobart established the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company at Sand Harbor. Logs from around the lake were towed to the harbor by steamship, then sent by railway a sawmill in Incline Village. Soon, timber along the lakeshore became scarce and the logging operation was moved to Truckee, California. A business associate of the Hobart family, George Whittell Jr. purchased most of the east side of Lake Tahoe just after the turn of the century. His parcel included Sand Harbor, where he planned to build a casino and hotel. Beginning in 1936, Whittell focused on the construction of his own lavish summer estate, the Thunderbird Lodge. As the years passed, George grew more reclusive, gradually abandoning his development plans for Tahoe’s east shore in favor of maintaining his own hideaway. In the late 1960's, Whittell agreed to sell a portion of his lakeshore property to the State of Nevada for public use. This 5000 acre land acquisition became the foundation for Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, which includes Sand Harbor Cove.
