- Description: Built as a summer home in 1929, this grand castle on Emerald Bay is considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the Western Hemisphere. The castle is based on many buildings dating back to 1000-1500 A.D. in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Ideas were derived 11th Century wooden churches in Norway and stone castles in southern Sweden. Several features are modeled after wooden homes, some eight centuries old, in Lillehammer, Norway. All have some influence on the design of Vikingsholm.
