- Title: Zion Desert Tarantula
- Description: Tarantulas are rarely seen in Zion, as they are nocturnal and spend most of their time in underground burrows. This desert tarantula (Aphonopelma iodius) emerges from their burrows to search for mates. The females are basically homebodies who don’t travel far from their individual burrows during their lifespan of up to 25 years. Males may live up to 10 years and are the tarantulas most frequently seen during their perilous journey in search of a mate. In July 0f 2007, this specimen was beneath a rock outcrop on the trail to Emerald Pools. The photographer had the lucky need to tie a boot string on the trail and spied the 6 inch female in the shadows of ledge, just out of arms reach. We had no desire to touch her regardless, but she did pause for this cool capture!
