Located 30 miles northwest of Thermopolis, Wyoming, Legend Rock is a world-renowned rock art site. Located on a near vertical cliff, approximately 1300 feet long and 50 feet tall, Legend Rock was used for thousands of years by prehistoric groups who spent their lives hunting game and gathering edibles in the Big Horn Basin. Nearly 300 images appear
on the rock, most of which researchers call members of the Dinwoody
tradition. Found west of the Big Horn River in the Big Horn and Wind
River Basins, Dinwoody tradition rock art is known for its distinctive
figures, which are pecked into the rock surface. The Dinwoody
tradition includes large human or human-like figures with headdresses
whose torsos are often decorated with patterns of lines. Descriptions in this limited series by Artwestimage.com uses quotations from findings in Keyser and Klassen's Plains Indian Rock Art (2001).
In Thermopolis, Wyoming, the healing waters of the area’s mineral springs attracted dinosaurs,
prehistoric migratory people, Native American tribes, Western settlers,
and now travelers visiting Wyoming. Native Americans
believed the water contained therapeutic power. In the early 19th
century a sizeable medical community formed in Thermopolis, centered
around the natural hot springs and treating those visiting in hopes the water
would restore their health. The Shoshone and Arapaho tribes gave Wyoming
the hot springs in a treaty in 1896. The turquoise and green mineral laden spring outpours 3.6 million gallons
of 127 degree water per day. The Rainbow Terraces, created from the minerals of the hot springs water,
algae and plankton, look like small waterfalls flowing off into the Big Horn River. The adjacent suspension bridge offers views of the Big Horn River, the Rainbow
Terraces, Tee Pee Fountain and the city park. Finally, Hot Springs State Park contains Wyoming’s state bison herd. The herd roams the open range on several square miles of prairie grassland on the north and east
sides of town.
